Description: Slatin Pasha was appointed by General Gordon to the post of Governor of Darfur, Sudan, 1878 (?); British Inspector-General of the Sudan 1900-1914. Baron of the Austrian Empire, 1906; Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George, 1898, Knight Commander of the Victorian Order, 1908. Slatin was also an authority on Sudanese medicine: see R.C. Slatin, Additional notes to article by H.C. Zeki, 'The healing art as practised by the dervishes in the Sudan during the rule of the Mahdi and the Khalifa', Third report of the Wellcome Research Laboratories at the Gordon Memorial College Khartoum, London 1908, pp. 277-279. Another portrait of Slatin in oils is in the Royal Collection at St James's Palace (1997).

Description: Islamic holy men, known as fikas, write phrases from the Quran (the holy book of Islam) or mystic inscriptions on wooden boards, known as lohn or prayer boards. When the ink is dry, it is washed from the board and drunk or applied to the body to cure illness. This practice is known as El Mahara.

Description: In 1884 General Charles G. Gordon was sent to Khartoum to evacuate the Egyptian garrison. He attempted to defeat the Mahdi, but in 1885 the Mahdi captured Khartoum and massacred General Gordon and the garrison. The dervishes (followers of the Mahdi) took control of all Sudan except for the Red Sea fortresses.
