The Baggara is a large ethnic group consisting of several tribes, clans, stomachs, and clans united by one language, one religion, a common history, common customs and traditions. Its total population exceeds six million people and spreads over a single geographical area known as the Baggara belt, extending in the region from the borders of the Ethiopian and Eritrean borders with Sudan, to the borders of the Nigerian border. Along with Chad and Nigeria, it is considered one of the most important ethnic groups in Sudan and Chad, as it played a major historical and political role in the two countries, especially in Sudan during the Mahdia rule and beyond.
