Tales of Jewish Sudan

Tales of Jewish Sudan is a collection of stories, photos and recipes of the Sudan Jewish community, established by Daisy Abboudi. Daisy is a historian and an expert in the Jewish community of Sudan. Both her paternal and maternal grandparents were either born or grew up in Sudan. The stories of this unique community in Sudan inspired her to create the website Tales of Jewish Sudan in 2015.

The Jewish community of Sudan was a melting pot of people from all over the Middle East. Various traditions and food cultures of the community came together and adopted an extra Sudanese dimension. The community was largely active from 1900-1970 and at its peak numbered approximately 250 families, who lived a peaceful cosmopolitan life in places such as Khartoum, Omdurman and Wad Madani. Daisy decided it would be a great shame if the memories of this community were not preserved for future generations, and so she set about documenting them. Armed with her (Ancient) History MA, the audio recorder on her phone, a portable scanner and a desire to hang out with some older Sudanese Jews, she began her journey.

Daisy has written numerous articles on the Jewish community of Sudan and her work has appeared in many publications, and her research for Tales of Jewish Sudan is to be turned into a book. Since 2017, Daisy has also been the Deputy Director of the oral history charity Sephardi Voices UK, which documents the experiences and testimonies of Sephardi and Mizrahi Jews from the Middle East, North Africa, and Iran, who now live in the UK.

Daisy has contributed a number of stories and photographs from her research to be featured as part of Sudan Memory. She welcomes visitors to the Tales of Jewish Sudan website to explore this collection further.
