Sudan Archaeological Research Society

The Sudan Archaeological Research Society (SARS) was established in 1991 by a group of British archaeologists in collaboration with the Sudan National Corporation for Antiquities and Museums (NCAM) and the British Council in Sudan. The society was set up with the aim of advancing knowledge and interest in the cultural heritage of Sudan. Most significantly, SARS supports expeditions to excavate and record threatened sites before they are lost to knowledge forever.

The SARS archive contains the original records from the society's survey and excavation projects, as well as many photographs, negatives, and transparencies donated by numerous researchers between the 1930s and 1980s. There are also a large number of plans and elevations, maps, aerial photographs, and satellite images. Many SARS materials record sites long since destroyed, particularly those in the region of Lake Nubia/Nasser and at Suakin.

The society has, with the permission of NCAM, donated select artifacts from excavations, such as Kawa and Gabati, to the British Museum. Rock art, ceramics, and human remains from the Fourth Cataract were recovered during the Merowe Dam Archaeological Salvage Project, some of which are now on display in the British Museum. The majority of the SARS materials are housed in Sudan with NCAM in the Sudan National Museum in Khartoum, the Merowe Museum, Al-Multaga, and the Jebel Barkal Museum in Kareima.

Sudan Memory has worked with the SARS archive at the British Museum to scan over 8000 items across 11 collections. Scanned materials from two collections are presented here. For more information on the SARS collections, please contact the contributor.
